Wintry sunlight filtered through the window in the tiny kitchen as Tonks paused in the doorway, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

Aziraphael glanced up from the kettle and waved her into the room, settling her in a chair and asking unimportant questions in a soothing tone that kept her suitably distracted for the time being. Crowley walked in a moment later, ruffling her hair before he fetched china cups for all of them, giving the stoneware mugs a wide berth for no discernible reason. Aziraphael poked him as he passed, eliciting a smirk from the demon.

Soon there was toast, and jam, and hot apple tea and boiled eggs, the last of which Crowley put onto Tonks’ plate despite her protestations. They divvied up the Times between them, Aziraphael solicitously offering her the entertainment section, saying that he never really read it anyway. Tonks and Crowley rolled their eyes at one another when he’d looked away.

Tonks lapsed into silence after a little while, sipping her tea, and let their good-natured bickering envelop her like a warm blanket. She smiled slightly when Aziraphael made up another piece of toast and surreptitiously snuck it onto her plate, and bit back a snicker as Crowley glared the wireless into submission when it had the audacity to play Queen.

It was easy, in this bright, cramped kitchen, with two of her best friends there to hold her steady, to believe that everything was going to be all right.

She soaked it all up, every ounce of it, hoping desperately that it carried her through the day ahead.
