He spent the day in their room.

Nymphadora knew that if Bernard spent too much time in public today of all days, someone would end up incinerated or worse. So, save the time they took to get Sunny up and out of her room, she made him promise to stay in.

He did. Because she asked. And she was right.

He and Sunny played in their rooms, drawing and reading and biting (on her part), and had a good time, till she got restless around mid-afternoon. Remembering the safety charms on her, Bernard decided to let her loose in the bar proper while he stayed in. He wasn't too worried, and it didn't do to be so cautious you can't move.

He was almost finished with Me Talk Pretty One Day and thinking of what book to start next, when she came home.

He smiled and put the book down, standing up to kiss her. "Hey."

Nymphadora kissed him back for a moment, and then her brow crinkled. "Where's Sunny?"

Bernard looked unconcerned. "She's got half the bar looking out for her. I peeked out at her, and she was flying around, having a good time." A small grin, just for her. "We've got some time to ourselves."

She grinned back. "Well. Waste not."

He concurred.

There was really nothing more satisfying, reflected Bernard as his fingers tangled in the long, wet, black mess that was Nymphadora's hair, than spending an hour or two in the bathtub. He kissed the sensitive spot where her shoulder met her neck as she rested her back against his chest. She sighed, smiling, and relaxed against him more fully. Bernard took a long breath of the steamy air.

“You’re quiet,” he said, propping his chin on her shoulder. “Everything okay?”

She leaned her head against his. “Yeah. Just thinking about the weekend.”

Bernard let his eyes drift shut for a moment, smiling. “It was good.” Then, a little more tentatively, “Wasn’t it?”

With a soft laugh, Nymphadora turned her head slightly and kissed him, her lips warm on his. “It was. It was great.”

They fell silent for a few minutes, and the slight drip of the tap at their feet echoed through the room. Then she took a deep breath. “Wonder if Sunny’s brother and sister will ever show up here.”

“Violet and Klaus? I don’t know. But…” he added, “If they do, we’ll make sure they’re safe.”

Nymphadora nodded, her brow furrowing as she recalled everything Bernard had told her about Count Olaf. “Hope they’re okay.”

Bernard bit his lip. “I know. So do I.” Then he tightened his arms around Nymphadora and kissed her cheek. "S'pose we ought to go and see how she's doing now."

“S’pose so,” she murmured, covering his hand with her own and squeezing it gently. After another moment or two, she reluctantly braced her hands on the sides of the tub and stood, dripping, to fetch her towel.

Bernard watched, a small smile on his face, as she carefully stepped out onto the rug, and then followed her. His smile widening, he took the towel from her hands and went to work drying her long, tangled hair. She laughed, steadying herself against him as he vigorously rubbed most of the moisture away, and then leaned forward to kiss him.

“I’ve got spells for that sort of thing, you know,” Nymphadora said, poking him in the ribs and grinning.

“Eh.” He grinned back at her, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “Some things are worth doing the old-fashioned way.” He kissed her again, more slowly this time, and then wrapped the towel around her shoulders. “C’mon. Let’s go see what the Incredible Flying Baby’s been up to.”

She snickered. “I don’t even want to imagine.”

“Ah, she’s all right,” Bernard said, toweling his own hair dry and walking back out into the bedroom. “She’s a smart little thing.” He glanced over at his desk, where the drawing she’d made them lay, and felt a rush of pride. When he looked up, Nymphadora was watching him, a small smile on her face. He flushed, grinning slightly.

She walked over and slid her arms around his waist, kissing his shoulder. “You amaze me,” she murmured, still grinning. “Just…I love you.”

He wrapped his arms tightly around her.

Life was good.
