Since Bernard returned from visiting Raph, it's been quiet in the Tonks-Wrangle flat. Anthony had a fussy night, and Sunny was grumpy about Bernard's disappearance at bedtime. Nymphadora's tired, which accounts for part of the reason she's quiet; mostly, though, she's waiting for Bernard to talk to her.

That can sometimes take a while.

"How often is justice served by imprisonment?" he murmurs, shrugging. "I mean, he knows why, and it never occured to him to be upset, and he doesn't mind. He let me out. But I understand what was trespassed upon, even if he doesn't, or won't."

He facepalms, and almost laughs. "Raph is going to gut me and string a lute out of my small intestine.

A light shrug. "Maybe, maybe not. He's had his own share of communication troubles with Mike. I think Raph'll understand, maybe more than anyone, how strong the desire to just try and make Mike listen can be."

"Not an issue of him listening, 'Dora." His voice trembles, his tone slightly raised. "I didn't understand how he was, how he-- I'm an only child, and I never had older brothers to knock me around, you know?"

Quietly, "I do know, actually. I'm an only child as well."

"He didn't really. Didn't fight that hard. And I think it's because he." Bernard struggles to express it. "He's used to being pushed around. And I shouldn't have."

Nymphadora lets out a slow breath, and chooses her words carefully.

"You are... well, you're a bit of a force of nature, Bernard. You know that, I think. Only sometimes you forget, and the image inside your head of how things ought to be clouds the reality of things, and-- and yeah, sometimes you forget that there are people involved."

He nods, biting the inside of his cheek. This time, when he rubs his eye, his hand comes away wet.

"What d'you think I should do?"

Her arm slips around his shoulders, and Nymphadora pulls him closer.

"Think you ought to try talking to him again. And Bar, as well. Maybe the three of you can work out the boundaries between you a bit more thoroughly."

He lets himself be pulled sideways, arms slipping around her waist, half-lying against her. "He's not the easiest to talk to. Talks around everything."

"I know," she murmurs, "which is how you got into this situation in the first place, partially. But I think you've got to try."

He nods, his hair brushing her neck, and turns his face into her shoulder.

Nymphadora presses a kiss to the crown of his head. "Love you."

There is a telling sniffle.

"I love you, too."

"Shh. Gonna be okay. Really."

She rocks him back and forth, just a bit, and rests her cheek on his bright hair.

"Really fucked up," he mumbles into her skin, breathing her in, trying to stay calm.

"A bit," she concedes, her eyes slipping closed. "But we all have, now and again."

"'M the dinh. Not s'posed to fuck things up."

A soft, breathy laugh. "As you've said to me when I say things like that... fuck off, sweetheart."

He laughs despite himself, and lifts his head to look at her.

"I love you."

"Yeah, I know."

'Dora half-smiles and leans in to kiss him on the cheek.

Bernard's eyes slip closed, and he leans his forehead against her temple.

"Funny. Haven't done anything to fix it, but I feel better just having talked to you about it."

"Glad I can help," she murmurs, her lips still against his skin.

"Ew," Sunny remarks helpfully.

Not really. It's nice when they get along and kiss and stuff, cause that's love. And stuff.

But some of the kids at day care say "ew" at kissing and she's picked it up.

Bernard turns, wiping under one eye quickly.

"Ew? I'll show you ew." He crawls over and zerberts her horribly.

"Ew!" she repeats, but this time it's a bit more meant.

She's giggling anyway.
